Gift-wrapping a leather bag works best when you preserve its natural shape. Tight paper around a handle strains the leather and often tears at the corners. A suitable box with soft, uncoloured paper is usually easier.
Make the outside festive and keep the inside simple. Avoid tape on leather, tight ribbon around the bag itself and scented fillers. The recipient should not need to pull a protective layer off the surface.
Start with the right box
Choose a sturdy box that fits the bag in its usual shape. Let handles rest naturally; do not fold a rigid handle to close the lid. Leave space for a soft layer between the bag and cardboard without allowing the contents to slide around.
Try the bag in the open box, then close the lid without pressure. If the cardboard bulges, the box is too small. A very large box is not necessarily better: spare space needs filling and lets the bag move during transport.
What should touch the leather?
Use clean, uncoloured, preferably acid-free tissue paper or a suitable clean fabric dust bag. Avoid newspaper, coloured crepe paper and glitter directly against leather. They may transfer colour or dirt, especially if the packaging gets damp.
If there is a detachable strap, lay it beside the bag without sharp folds. Wrap metal clips separately in soft paper so they do not rub a leather panel. On a handbag such as Beau, leave space around the handles and projecting fittings too.
Five straightforward wrapping steps
- Check that the bag and packaging are completely dry and clean. Leave labels and protective parts attached if an exchange may be needed.
- Line the box with soft paper. If necessary, loosely support the bag inside with clean paper without stretching the leather.
- Place the bag in its natural shape. Separate metal fittings and loose straps from the leather with a soft layer.
- Fold tissue loosely over it. Close the box and check nothing is compressed.
- Wrap the box and attach ribbon and a card to the outside.
A small accessory such as the Aris wallet can go in a separate box beside the bag. Avoid hiding it unnoticed in an internal pocket if it is meant to be a separate gift. Thoughtful packaging also prevents anything being discarded accidentally.
Can you manage without a box?
A roomy gift bag with a sturdy base can work for a supple leather bag. Support the bottom and check the gift bag handles can carry the weight. The leather bag should never hang from wrapping paper. For a delicate or structured design, a box is preferable.
A cloth or reusable fabric wrap is another option. Tie it loosely around the packaging rather than tightly over a flap or handle. Reusable materials are most useful when the recipient can realistically use them again.
If the gift will wait before being opened
Keep it dry and out of direct sunlight. Do not leave it for weeks beside a radiator or in a damp shed. An airtight plastic layer is unnecessary and can trap existing moisture. Close the packaging only when every part is dry.
