It started during Lisa's internship in Kuala Lumpur. In her free time she began designing bags herself, and became interested in how leather is actually made. What she discovered wasn't always pretty: most leather bags are tanned with chemicals that are bad for the environment and for the people who work with them.
Vegetable tanning turned out to be an older technique using bark, leaves and fruits instead of chrome. More expensive and more labour-intensive, but a lot cleaner.
What began as a hobby became more serious. In 2025 Lisa and her brother Sven started Beocca, with the idea that there are more people who want to know how their bag is made and what it took to make it.
By now we work with a fixed group of makers and tanneries who think the same way about quality and provenance.
