Summary: Vegetable-tanned leather costs more than chrome-tanned leather, but delivers a bag that lasts for years, becomes more beautiful with time and is better for the environment. We explain why that price difference exists and what you get in return.
The honest story behind the price
If you compare our bags with cheaper alternatives from big chains, the price difference stands out. We understand that. But that difference isn't in the margin; it's in the leather itself. We deliberately work with vegetable-tanned leather, and that's a choice that directly affects the price, the quality and the lifespan of every bag that leaves our workshop.
What exactly is vegetable tanning?
In vegetable tanning, natural tanning agents are used: tree bark, leaves and fruits from oak, chestnut and mimosa, among others. This process takes weeks to months, with the hides slowly immersed in baths. By comparison: chrome-tanned leather is ready within a day.
That time makes all the difference. The slow process means the fibres are penetrated more deeply, resulting in a firmer, more compact leather with more character. Want to know more about the differences? Then read our article on vegetable-tanned vs. chrome-tanned leather.
Why does it cost more?
1. It simply takes longer
Where chrome-tanned leather can be ready within 24 hours, vegetable tanning takes four to six weeks. Sometimes longer. That time translates directly into higher production costs. More space is needed, more labour and more patience.
2. Natural raw materials are more expensive
The tanning agents come from tree bark and plant extracts. These are more expensive than the chemical chromium salts that are standard in the industry. On top of that, availability is seasonal, which affects the price even more.
3. More craftsmanship required
Vegetable-tanned leather calls for experienced hands. The process is less predictable than chrome tanning and requires constant supervision. Every hide reacts differently, and small adjustments in the process make the difference between good and exceptional leather.
4. Less production, higher quality
Only 10 to 15 percent of all leather worldwide is vegetable-tanned. The tanneries that have mastered this craft are smaller and deliberately produce less. That keeps quality high, but makes the leather scarcer.
What do you get in return?
Patina: your bag becomes unique
The best thing about vegetable-tanned leather? It gets better with time. Through daily use, sunlight and the natural oils of your hands, the leather develops a patina: a warm, deeper colour that belongs to you. No two bags age the same way. After a year of use you'll recognise your bag out of thousands.
Firmness you can feel
Pick up a bag made of vegetable-tanned leather and you feel the difference straight away. The leather is firmer, has more body and holds its shape. Where cheaper leather starts to sag or flake after a few months, vegetable-tanned leather keeps its structure for years.
A lifespan of years, not months
We see it all the time: customers who come back with a bag that looks better after three or four years than it did on day one. That's no coincidence. Vegetable-tanned leather is made to last. The investment pays for itself because you don't have to buy a new bag every season.
Better for the environment
Chrome tanning uses heavy metals that, if processed incorrectly, are harmful to people and nature. Vegetable tanning works with natural substances that are biodegradable. It's not perfect (no production process is), but it's a more conscious choice.
The price in perspective
A bag made of vegetable-tanned leather costs more to buy. But do the maths: if you use it for five to ten years, what does it cost per year? Compare that with two or three cheap bags you replace over that same period. The cost per wear with a quality leather bag is often lower.
What's more, you're not just buying a bag. You're buying a piece of craftsmanship, a material with history and a product that grows with you instead of deteriorating.
