Your laptop is probably the most expensive tool you use every day. So it deserves better protection than a cheap sleeve or an overstuffed backpack. A quality leather laptop bag protects your laptop, lasts for years and even grows more beautiful over those years. But how do you choose the right one?

Why a leather laptop bag?
Nylon, polyester, canvas, recycled plastic; there are plenty of alternatives. Yet leather remains the best choice for anyone who values quality and durability.
Protection: Full-grain (genuine leather of the highest quality) bags absorb shocks better than thin synthetic materials. Its natural sturdiness protects your laptop against knocks and scratches in a way that nylon simply cannot match.
Lifespan: A good leather laptop bag lasts 10 to 15 years. Nylon wears out, canvas fades, but full-grain leather only grows more beautiful with use. That saves you several cheap bags over the same period.
Appearance: In a business setting, leather radiates professionalism. Whether it is a meeting, a client visit or a job interview, a leather bag makes a better first impression than a sporty backpack.
Choosing the right size
The first step is to measure your laptop. And we mean actually measure it, so with a ruler. The screen diagonal (13", 15", 17") doesn't tell you everything about the physical dimensions. A 15-inch Dell can be centimetres wider than a 15-inch MacBook.
Measure three things: the width, height and thickness of your laptop. Compare these with the internal dimensions of the bag, not the external measurements.
13 inch (MacBook Air, ultrabooks)
Compact laptops fit in smaller bags, which is pleasant in terms of carrying comfort. Look for a bag with an internal width of 34 to 35 cm. The advantage: the bag stays light and compact. The risk: if you later buy a larger laptop, it won't fit. So consider a bag that can also take a 14-inch.
15-16 inch (MacBook Pro, standard laptops)
The most common size. Most laptop bags are designed for this. Look for an internal width of at least 38 to 40 cm and a padded laptop compartment; not simply an open space your laptop slides into.
The Mason 15" is designed specifically for this size. It comfortably fits a 15" MacBook (and smaller, of course), with room for a charger and documents alongside.
17 inch and larger
Large laptops are heavy, and that places extra demands on the bag. Reinforced handles are essential, a wide shoulder strap is not a luxury but a necessity, and the leather must be sturdy enough to bear the weight. Cheap, thin leather tears under this weight.
The Bryce backpack is designed for laptops up to 17 inches and distributes the weight across both shoulders.
Type of bag: what suits your way of working?
Mason laptop bag
Ideal for: office professionals, consultants, lawyers.
The classic business choice. Crisply structured, stands upright, offers room for documents alongside your laptop. Usually carried by hand, unless you add the included shoulder strap.
Backpack
Ideal for: students, tech professionals, people who carry a lot.
A leather backpack distributes the weight across both shoulders — by far the most comfortable for daily use. Perfect if, alongside your laptop, you also carry books, a water bottle or gym clothes. Less formal than a briefcase, but increasingly accepted in business settings.
Which type suits you?
| Situation | Recommended type |
|---|---|
| Daily office, formal | Laptop bag |
| Public transport and cycling commute | Laptop bag with shoulder strap or backpack |
| Study + leisure | Backpack |
| Client visits and presentations | Laptop bag with handles |
| Heavy laptop (17"+) | Backpack |
Practical features
What you can't do without
Padded laptop compartment: Not optional. A separate, lined compartment protects your laptop against knocks. Without a padded compartment, every blow lands directly on your screen.
Sturdy zips: A broken zip makes your bag unusable. Quality zips (such as YKK) run smoothly and last for years. Cheap zips snag, tear and break, this is often the first part to give out.
Comfortable carrying strap: You carry this bag every day. Shoulder or back pain after ten minutes means you'll eventually stop reaching for the bag. With Beocca bags, a great deal of attention has been given to comfort.
Handy extras
Charger compartment: A separate compartment for your charger and cables prevents scratches on your laptop and keeps everything organised.
Detachable shoulder strap on laptop bags: Gives you flexibility. Carry it as a shoulder bag on the go and as a hand-held bag in a meeting.
Colour: a practical view
Cognac / brown: Ages the most beautifully — over time the patina gives cognac leather a rich, warm depth. Combines easily with blue, grey and beige (so most business clothing). Scratches are less noticeable.
Black: The safe business choice. Goes with everything, always professional. Scratches show up slightly more quickly, and the patina development is more subtle. For a sleek, formal office, black is the logical choice.
Price and what you get for it
The price difference for leather laptop bags is large, but the difference in lifespan is even larger.
Under €100: Probably not full-grain leather. Often corrected leather or bonded leather with cheap hardware. The laptop compartments are rarely well padded. Lifespan: 2 to 3 years. Want to know more about these types of leather? Read the materials chapter in our buyer's guide.
€100 – €200: Here you'll find full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather with solid hardware and handmade construction. With good care, these bags last 10 to 15 years. Per year that's €10 to €20, which is many times cheaper than buying a new budget bag every two years.
Frequently asked questions
Is a leather laptop bag water-resistant?
Yes, water-resistant. Not waterproof. It will survive a rain shower just fine, especially if you treat the leather with grease regularly. You should avoid prolonged exposure to water. Your laptop itself isn't waterproof either, by the way. That's why a rain cover for extreme weather conditions is always sensible.
How long does a leather laptop bag last?
With good care, 10 to 20 years. Full-grain leather grows stronger and more beautiful with the years.
Can I put my leather bag in the washing machine?
No, never. A damp cloth for stains and regular greasing is all you need. Have a look at our leather care tips for more information.
Which laptop bag do you recommend?
That depends on your laptop and your way of working. For 15-inch laptops, the Mason 15" is our most popular choice. For larger laptops up to 17 inches and maximum carrying comfort: the Bryce backpack. Browse all the options in our laptop bags collection.
