Start with the leather itself
The most important component is, of course, the leather. First check whether it is genuine leather and preferably full-grain leather or vegetable-tanned leather. This type of leather ages beautifully and develops a warm patina over time. Cheap corrected or coated leather does not, and is more likely to peel.
When inspecting the bag, look for these things:
- Dryness and cracks. Does the leather feel hard or stiff, or can you see fine cracks? Then the bag has dried out. Mild dryness can be treated with leather grease, but deep cracks are permanent.
- Stains and discoloration. An even patina is beautiful, but large dark grease stains or water rings are rarely possible to remove completely.
- Wear on the corners and bottom. This is where damage appears first. A little wear is part of used leather, but worn-through edges where the underlying layer is visible are a concern.
Stitching, seams, and construction
The finish reveals the quality and condition of the bag. Good craftsmanship can be seen in neat, even stitching without loose threads. Gently pull on the handles and straps: these are precisely the areas that endure the most daily tension.
- Check whether any stitches are coming loose, especially where the shoulder strap is attached.
- Look at the corners and bottom, where the leather is under the most stress.
- Feel whether the bag holds its shape or instead feels limp and misshapen.
A single loose thread is generally easy to repair. Seams coming apart on a load-bearing section are more difficult and expensive to have repaired.
Hardware, zippers, and closures
The hardware is often the first thing to fail with intensive use. Test all the zippers a few times by moving them back and forth: do they run smoothly or catch? A stuck zipper is frustrating and cannot always be replaced without opening the leather.
- Check buckles, snap buttons, and magnetic closures for functionality and rust.
- Make sure D-rings and carabiners are firmly attached and not worn down.
- Look for missing components; replacement hardware in the right color is not always easy to find.
The smell test
Feel free to smell the bag, even if it feels a little strange. Genuine leather has a warm, natural scent. A musty, moldy odor indicates moisture damage and is difficult to remove. A strong smell of smoke also rarely comes out of the leather completely.
The inside and the details
