What a school bag has to endure
A school bag is one of the most heavily used types of bags there is. Every day, it is packed with books, a laptop, and a lunchbox, taken along on a bicycle in all kinds of weather, placed on the ground, and kicked against table legs.
That means the requirements are different from those for a bag you only take with you occasionally. The material and construction must withstand the strain, and the carrying comfort determines whether you will avoid back problems three years from now.
Shoulder bag or backpack
This is the first choice, and the most important one.
A backpack distributes the weight across both shoulders and keeps it close to your back. If you carry more than four kilograms every day, this is almost always the wisest choice. It is also safer on a bicycle because the weight remains centered.
A shoulder bag or messenger bag is quicker to use because you do not have to take it off to look inside. However, the weight hangs from one shoulder, which can cause uneven strain over time when carrying more than three to four kilograms.

Size
Measure your largest book and your laptop, then add two centimeters.
For secondary school: room for A4 folders, three to five books, a pencil case, and a lunchbox. Allow approximately 20 to 25 liters.
For college and university: usually a laptop, a notebook, and an occasional book. Often, 15 to 20 liters is sufficient, making laptop protection more important than volume.
A bag that is much too large invites you to fill it, meaning you carry unnecessary weight.
Where school bags break
There are four predictable weak points. Assess each model accordingly.
The attachment of the shoulder straps. This is the number-one concern. Look for straps secured with multiple rows of stitching and preferably rivets as well, rather than a single line of stitching. A reinforcement triangle or an extra leather patch at the attachment point is a good sign.
The base. A bag that is placed on the ground every day wears out at the bottom. A double layer of leather or protective feet can significantly extend its lifespan.
The zipper. A full bag puts it under tension. A metal-tooth zipper from a reputable brand is a worthwhile investment here.
The corners. The most strain occurs where the leather folds over and the seams meet. Check whether these areas are reinforced.

Carrying comfort
- Wide straps. At least four centimeters. Narrow straps dig in under heavy weight.
- Padded straps. This is less common with leather, but a soft lining on the inside makes a difference.
- Adjustable. The bag should sit high on your back, with the bottom just above your hips. A strap that cannot be shortened enough allows the bag to sag.
- A back panel with some structure. This prevents the corner of a book from digging into your back.
Laptop protection
If you will be carrying a laptop, this deserves special attention. Look for a compartment that keeps the laptop off the bottom of the bag, so that an impact when setting it down does not transfer directly to the device. A padded compartment that ends a few centimeters above the bottom is clearly better than a loose compartment that runs all the way to the base.

Why leather is a logical choice for school
It may sound contradictory to choose a more expensive bag for the heaviest use, but that is precisely where the calculation comes in.
A forty-euro nylon school bag lasts one to two school years on average. Over six years of secondary school, that means three to five bags. A bag made of vegetable-tanned full-grain leather will easily last those six years and then continue with you into further education.

Practical considerations
- Rain. Leather can withstand a shower, but a laptop should be kept in a waterproof sleeve. See Is leather waterproof?.
- Weight of the bag itself. Leather weighs more than nylon. Allow for a difference of four to eight hundred grams, and take this into account when considering the total load.
- Color. Cognac and dark brown conceal wear best and develop the most beautiful patina. Black remains sleek but shows scratches more clearly.
- Maintenance. Condition it twice a year, and after a wet bicycle ride, simply let it dry slowly.
