Summary: Measure your laptop yourself, because 17 inches refers to the screen diagonal and says nothing about the casing. For this size, preferably choose a backpack, and pay particular attention to a padded compartment that keeps the laptop off the bottom.
17 inches is not a size
The inch measurement refers to the screen diagonal, not the device’s dimensions. Two laptops that are both called 17 inches can differ by two centimeters in width and half a kilogram in weight.
A thin 17-inch work laptop measures approximately 38 by 26 by 1.8 centimeters and weighs around two kilograms. A gaming model of the same size can measure 40 by 29 by 3 centimeters and weigh nearly three kilograms.
So always measure the laptop yourself: width, depth, and thickness, and add half to one centimeter for clearance. Compare this with the inside dimensions of the laptop compartment, not the outside dimensions of the bag.
Why a backpack for this size
With 13- and 15-inch laptops, a shoulder bag is still manageable. With 17 inches, the calculation changes.
The laptop weighs two to three kilograms, the bag itself one to one and a half kilograms, and then there is a half-kilogram charger plus some paperwork. You quickly reach five kilograms carried on one shoulder.
On top of that, a 17-inch bag is wide. Carried on one shoulder, it sticks out far behind you, which is inconvenient on public transport and when cycling.

The laptop compartment
This is the part that should provide the most protection, and where most bags fall short.
Suspended bottom. The best design leaves the laptop compartment ending two to three centimeters above the bottom of the bag. When you put the bag down, the laptop does not touch the ground. This is by far the most important detail.
Padding all around. Not only on the back side but also on the outside. A 17-inch screen is large and bends more easily under impact than a smaller panel.
A fastening. A hook-and-loop closure or elastic strap prevents the laptop from sliding out when you tilt the bag.
A soft lining. Rough fabric can scratch the casing when you slide the laptop in and out.
Carrying comfort
- Wide shoulder straps. At least five centimeters for this weight.
- A chest strap. Pulls the straps toward each other and prevents them from slipping off your shoulders. At five kilograms, you notice this immediately.
- A structured back panel. Distributes the pressure and prevents the corner of the laptop from pressing into your back.
- A short, wide grab handle. For lifting the bag onto a train or under a desk.
For a shoulder bag, choose a wide strap with an anti-slip layer or shoulder pad, and check that the attachment point on the bag is reinforced.
What to look for in the construction
A 17-inch bag structurally carries more weight than a smaller one. The attachment points are therefore more critical.
- Are the shoulder straps or handles attached with multiple rows of stitching or rivets, or with a single seam?
- Is the bottom reinforced or double-layered?
- Is the zipper made of metal and from a recognizable brand?
- Are the edges finished, or left raw?

Weight of the bag itself
This is the main compromise with leather. An empty leather 17-inch backpack quickly weighs one and a half kilograms, compared with seven to nine hundred grams for a nylon version.
That difference is real, but weigh it against what you get in return: a bag that holds its shape, protects the laptop better through its rigidity, and lasts ten to fifteen years instead of three.

If 17 inches turns out to be too large
Many people with a 17-inch laptop mainly use it in one fixed location. If you take it with you only once or twice a week, combining a smaller everyday bag with a separate laptop sleeve may be more practical than carrying a large bag every day.
