You pull the zip closed, but it opens again behind the slider. Or a piece of lining is trapped and nothing moves. Repairing a bag zip starts with identifying the problem. Pulling harder rarely helps.
Loose fabric and an overfilled bag can often be dealt with at home. Missing teeth, a torn zip tape or a damaged slider need a repair specialist. That does not always mean replacing the entire zip.
Which part has failed?
The slider is the metal or plastic part that brings the two sides together. The pull tab is the piece you hold. The teeth or coil are attached to fabric tape. Knowing these parts helps you describe the fault accurately when asking for a repair.

Freeing a stuck bag zip

Stop if the fabric will not release or threads start pulling out. Cutting beside the slider can easily make a hole. Tweezers may help with a loose thread, but do not push a sharp point under leather or stitching. The opening should be relaxed before you continue.
A stiff zip is not necessarily worn out
Look for sand, dried dirt and loose fibres. Remove accessible dirt with a dry, soft brush. Then slowly close the empty bag with both sides aligned. Pull along the direction of the zip, rather than lifting the tab away from the bag.
Avoid cooking oil, petroleum jelly and household lubricating sprays: they can soak into the leather and tape. Why pliers can make things worse
Online advice sometimes recommends squeezing a slider with pliers. A worn slider can cause a zip to separate, but the correct dimensions and pressure depend on the part. Too much force can deform or break it. The teeth may also be the real problem.

Prepare for a repair assessment
Photograph the entire opening and take a sharp close-up of the fault. Note whether it also sticks when the bag is empty and exactly where it happens. Remove personal belongings from every pocket.
