1. Feel the texture and weight
Take hold of the leather and gently squeeze it. Good full-grain leather feels firm yet supple, and springs back without breaking or creaking. It has a certain body: it doesn’t hang limp like plastic, but it also doesn’t feel stiff like cardboard. A bag made from solid leather also has a distinctive weight. If something feels suspiciously light and perfectly smooth, you’re often looking at coated split leather or synthetic leather with a sprayed-on top layer.
2. Smell it
Real vegetable-tanned leather has a warm, earthy, slightly woody scent. This scent comes from the natural tannins in tree bark and is one of the most reliable signs of quality. If something smells sharply chemical, like plastic or glue, it has probably been cheaply chrome-tanned or isn’t leather at all.
3. Examine the grain up close
Hold the leather up to the light and study the surface. Full-grain leather shows small irregularities: pores, subtle color variations, and sometimes a wrinkle or scar. These aren’t flaws, but evidence that the strongest outer layer of the hide has remained intact. A perfectly uniform, embossed pattern that repeats endlessly instead reveals an artificial or heavily corrected top layer.

With corrected leather, the surface is sanded and reprinted to hide imperfections. It looks neat, but the natural, breathable top layer is gone, along with much of the durability.
4. Check the edges
The finished edges reveal a lot. On quality leather, they are smoothly sanded, often colored, and neatly finished, without fraying or curling layers. Sloppy, cardboard-like, or fuzzy edges point to glued split leather or rushed workmanship. Run your thumb along them: they should feel even and firm.
5. Test how it responds to touch
Gently press your fingernail or thumb into the leather and see what happens. Good leather yields slightly and recovers, sometimes with a subtle shift in color that is part of the development of patina. If a white scratch or damaged spot remains, or if a coating comes away, the top layer is thin and vulnerable.
6. Inspect the stitching and details
Craftsmanship shows in the finishing. Straight, even stitches without loose threads, sturdy rivets, smooth zippers, and securely attached buckles are signs of a bag made with care. 7. Ask about the tanning method
An honest maker is happy to explain how the leather was tanned. Vegetable-tanned leather is more environmentally friendly, develops beautiful patina, and is free from chemical odors.
