You'll see it on structured handbags, card holders and laptop sleeves: a fine pattern of diagonal cross-hatching with a subtle sheen. That's saffiano leather. It is real leather, but the surface has been heat-pressed into that pattern and then finished with a wax coating. That makes it scratch-resistant and easy to keep clean, but it barely changes over the years.
How is saffiano leather made?
It starts with a tanned hide, often calfskin. The leather is heated so the fibres become supple, then pressed between metal plates that carry the cross-hatch pattern. Once it has cooled, it gets a finish, usually a wax. That layer gives the typical sheen and protects against moisture and scratches.
The technique is credited to Mario Prada, who patented it in the early twentieth century. The patent has long since expired, and many brands now make saffiano. Not always from real leather, by the way: the pattern is also printed onto PU or PVC faux leather. The advantages of saffiano leather
The big advantage is that it looks the same for a long time. A scratch from a key disappears into the pattern and often doesn't even reach the leather through the wax. A splash of coffee wipes off with a damp cloth. The leather is stiff, so a bag keeps its shape even when half empty. And it's light for how sturdy it is.
For a work bag that always needs to look sharp, or for anyone who can't be bothered with care, that's a fair argument.
The downsides: no patina and vulnerable corners
The downside is the same point. Saffiano leather doesn't change. It doesn't develop a patina, doesn't deepen in colour and doesn't take on the shape of how you use it. After five years a good saffiano bag looks roughly as it did on day one, or a little duller.
And when it wears, it wears less gracefully. On corners and along edges the finish rubs through after a few years, leaving bare, lighter leather. That doesn't darken back the way untreated leather does. You can touch it up with a colour cream, but it stays visible. Leather conditioner won't help either: it can't get through the wax and just sits greasy on the surface.

Which is better depends on what you want. If you want a bag that looks the same in ten years, choose saffiano. If you want one that looks better in ten years, you'll end up with open full-grain leather. Caring for saffiano leather
Very little work. Wipe the bag with a slightly damp, soft cloth and dry it off. Don't use conditioner, oil or wax meant for smooth leather, and avoid alcohol or hand sanitiser, which attack the finish. Store it in a dust bag so the corners don't rub against other things.
Why Beocca doesn't use saffiano
Our bags are made from vegetable-tanned full-grain leather, precisely because we like the way it ages. A scratch on the Beau mid-size handbag rubs away under your thumb, and after a year the colour is deeper than when you bought it. That asks for a little more care than saffiano, and you have to want it. If you're after a bag that always looks new, saffiano will honestly serve you better.
