Hoe herken je goede leerkwaliteit? 7 checks

How can you recognize good leather quality? 7 checks

Assess the material description together with the finish and construction.

Assess the material description together with the finish and construction. The words “genuine leather”, smell, weight or a photograph alone do not establish a reliable quality ranking. Ask for more product information when a detail is unclear.

1. Feel the texture and weight

Assess the material description together with the finish and construction. The words “genuine leather”, smell, weight or a photograph alone do not establish a reliable quality ranking. Ask for more product information when a detail is unclear.

2. Smell it

Real vegetable-tanned leather has a warm, earthy, slightly woody scent. This scent comes from the natural tannins in tree bark and is one of the most reliable signs of quality. If something smells sharply chemical, like plastic or glue, it has probably been cheaply chrome-tanned or isn’t leather at all.

3. Examine the grain up close

Full grain describes leather whose original grain has not been removed by corrective buffing. It is a material description; also assess the finish, construction and suitability for your use.

Full-grain versus corrected leather

With corrected leather, the surface is sanded and reprinted to hide imperfections. It looks neat, but the natural, breathable top layer is gone, along with much of the durability.

4. Check the edges

The finished edges reveal a lot. On quality leather, they are smoothly sanded, often colored, and neatly finished, without fraying or curling layers. Sloppy, cardboard-like, or fuzzy edges point to glued split leather or rushed workmanship. Run your thumb along them: they should feel even and firm.

5. Test how it responds to touch

Gently press your fingernail or thumb into the leather and see what happens. Good leather yields slightly and recovers, sometimes with a subtle shift in color that is part of the development of patina. If a white scratch or damaged spot remains, or if a coating comes away, the top layer is thin and vulnerable.

6. Inspect the stitching and details

Craftsmanship shows in the finishing. Straight, even stitches without loose threads, sturdy rivets, smooth zippers, and securely attached buckles are signs of a bag made with care. This is exactly where handmade work stands out: the people who make our bags in Kolkata pay attention to every stitch. Take a close look at our backpacks and laptop bags to see what proper finishing should look like.

7. Ask about the tanning method

Ask about the tanning method and sourcing. Vegetable-tanned leather uses plant-derived tannins and can develop a patina with use. Smell alone does not establish the tanning method or environmental impact.

Quality that grows with you

Good leather is an investment that pays off in years of loyal service and an appearance that only becomes more beautiful over time. Unlike cheap materials, which wear out and eventually get thrown away, quality leather actually ages more beautifully the more you use it. With the right care, it stays supple and strong; read our tips in leather care.

Remember that none of these seven checks is decisive on its own, but together they give you a clear picture. If the leather feels firm, smells natural, shows real grain, has neat edges, and features tight stitching, you probably have something that will give you years of enjoyment. If you want to experience the difference for yourself, take a look at our shoulder bags and feel where quality lies.
