Belt with a suit: which colour, width and buckle to choose

The right belt with a suit matches your shoes, is 3 to 3.5 cm wide and has a small, matt buckle. Plus why you should never wear a...

The suit is hanging ready, the shoes are polished, and then you reach for the belt you wear with your jeans. Chunky buckle, wide strap, a bit battered. It does not work, and you can see it in the mirror straight away. The right belt with a suit goes unnoticed, which is exactly why the wrong one stands out.

The short answer: choose a smooth leather belt in the same colour as your shoes, 3 to 3.5 cm wide, with a small, simple buckle. Black shoes, black belt. Brown shoes, brown belt in roughly the same shade. If you wear braces, you do not wear a belt. That is really all there is to it; the rest is fine-tuning.

What colour belt to wear with a suit

The old rule is also the best one: your belt follows your shoes, not your suit. Leather with leather, so the line from top to bottom stays calm. It does not need to be exactly the same shade, as two leathers from different makers are never identical. But dark brown shoes with a tan belt, or black shoes with a brown belt, draw the eye straight to your waist.

The suit then decides which shoes, and therefore which belt, work best. A rough guide:

Suit colourShoesBelt
NavyBlack, dark brown or tanSame colour as the shoes
Charcoal or mid greyBlack or dark brownBlack or dark brown
BlackBlackBlack
Light grey, beige or stoneMid brown, tan or suedeMid brown or tan, smooth leather
Brown or green tweedDark brownDark brown, a little texture is fine

The more formal the occasion, the darker you go. For a job interview, a funeral or a business meeting in a dark suit, black or very dark brown is the safe choice. At a summer wedding in a light suit, warmer and lighter is fine.

How wide should a belt with a suit be?

Between 3 and 3.5 cm. That is narrower than most jeans belts, which are often around 4 cm. The loops on suit trousers are narrower and finer than on jeans too, and a wide belt pulls them up or looks crammed in.

Your build plays a part. If you are tall and broad, 3.5 cm sits better. On a slim frame or with a slim-cut suit, 3 cm looks calmer. Below 2.5 cm you are into women's belts or dinner-suit territory, and that is not what you are after here.

Which buckle goes with a suit?

Small, flat and simple. A rectangular or softly rounded buckle in silver or gold tone, preferably matt or brushed rather than high-shine. No logos, no plate buckles, no big western shapes. The buckle is the only metal near your waist, so it is allowed to be there, but it does not need to say anything.

If you wear a watch with a steel case, many men go for a silver buckle. With a gold-tone watch, a brass buckle. It is not a hard rule, more something that makes the whole look a little calmer.

Which leather works with a suit?

Smooth leather, not too thick, with a clean edge. With a formal suit, skip suede and braided belts. Those belong with a sports jacket and chinos, or a linen suit in summer. A smooth belt with evenly polished edges and fine stitching, or no stitching at all, works best.

And here I want to be honest about our own belt. The Oden men's leather belt from Beocca is made from thick vegetable-tanned leather with a brass buckle. A sturdy belt that gets better with age, great with chinos, jeans or a casual suit and loafers. But with a dark, sharp business suit, a thinner, finer belt is the better choice. No single belt does everything, and that is fine.

What applies to every belt: a belt worn with a suit should look cared for. A dried-out, cracked belt stands out more than one in the wrong shade. A little balm a few times a year is enough; see how to care for a leather belt.

Belt or braces?

Never both. Braces hold your trousers up from your shoulders, a belt from your waist. Together is doubling up, which is exactly what the style rules try to avoid. Trousers made for braces usually have buttons on the inside of the waistband and often no belt loops.

The same goes for trousers with side adjusters or tabs at the waist. They are designed to be worn without a belt. A dinner suit does not take a belt either: the trousers have no loops, and the waistband is covered by a waistcoat or cummerbund.

How a belt with a suit should fit

The end should pass just through the first loop next to the buckle and no further. If a long tail is heading for your hip, the belt is too long. If you need the last hole, it is too short. The middle hole is the right size, with a little room either way for after dinner.

Pay attention to where the buckle sits, too. Most men wear suit trousers higher than jeans, at or just below the navel. A belt that fits your jeans perfectly may therefore be one hole out with your suit trousers. How to choose the right length and width is covered in detail in choosing a leather belt for life.

A mistake you often see in office outfits is a work bag that does not match the rest. Black belt, black shoes, and then a faded canvas backpack. The same leather-with-leather logic applies, in the same colour family. What works and what does not is covered in the best work bag for men.
