Your outfit is laid out, you have researched the company and practised your answers out loud. Then you are standing at the door with your everyday bag in your hand and suddenly you are not sure. Is this all right?
The short answer: take a calm bag that holds an A4 folder flat, without big logos, and do not carry more than you need. A smart shoulder bag, tote or laptop bag works almost every time. A backpack can be perfectly fine in some sectors, a tiny evening bag or an overflowing gym bag cannot.
How much does your bag really say?
Less than you fear. The person across the table is paying attention to what you say and how you say it, not to the brand of your bag. A job interview is about you. But a bag can be distracting. Think of rummaging for your CV while everyone waits, a bag that topples over when you put it down, or a phone buzzing among loose bits and pieces.
So your bag mainly matters in a few short moments: walking in, shaking hands, sitting down and taking something out. If those go smoothly, it is good enough. Practical beats eye-catching here.
Does an A4 folder fit?
That is the key question. Many companies already have your CV digitally, but it is wise to bring one or two printed copies, along with your cover letter and perhaps a portfolio or references. A4 is 21 by 29.7 centimetres, and a folder around it makes it a little bigger still. Because online shops list outside dimensions, look for a bag that comes in well above 30 centimetres in at least one direction.
An example from our own collection makes this clear. The Mira leather tote is 30 by 35 centimetres: an A4 folder stands upright inside with room to spare, and the reinforced base keeps the bag upright when you set it down next to your chair. The Ivy leather shoulder bag is also listed as A4-friendly in our own specifications, but at 29 centimetres wide on the outside, that is honestly tight. For a few loose sheets in a thin sleeve it works. For a sturdy folder with hard covers, you are better off with a bigger bag.
Which type of bag suits which job?
The sector decides more than you might think. What is normal at a start-up looks too casual at a law firm, and the other way round.
| Type of bag | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop bag | corporate roles, consultancy, finance | without a laptop inside it looks big and empty |
| Tote | office, education, healthcare, public sector | pick one with a pocket or zip so your CV does not crease |
| Shoulder bag with A4 space | almost anywhere | check the size, see above |
| Backpack | tech, creative agencies, start-ups | too casual for formal roles |
| Small bag | only if you are truly bringing nothing on paper | a loose folder in your hand is awkward when shaking hands |
A calm design, no big logos
A bag with a large logo or a loud print draws attention to something you do not want the conversation to be about. Choose a plain bag in black, dark brown or cognac instead. Those colours go with almost any outfit and do not stand out, and that is the whole point here.
The condition of your bag counts too. A leather bag with patina looks cared for, a bag with stains, loose threads or a broken zip does not. If your bag needs a little attention, give it a few days beforehand. How to care for a leather bag explains how to go about it without leaving the leather blotchy.
Checklist: your bag for a job interview
This is what goes in, and not much more:
- a folder with two printed CVs and your cover letter
- a pen and a small notebook
- photo ID, sometimes needed at reception or for an assessment centre
- your phone, on silent
- mints and a tissue
What can come out: old receipts, your lunch, gym kit and anything that rattles. Put the folder on top or in a separate pocket so you can grab it without searching. During the interview, put the bag on the floor next to your chair, not on the table and not on your lap. Interviews at larger companies sometimes start with a tour of the building. A bag with a shoulder strap is then more comfortable than one you have to carry by the handle.
And if you get the job?
Then the bag you choose now may become your everyday work bag. It pays to keep that in mind, especially if you are buying a new one anyway. Which sizes and shapes work well for the daily trip to the office is covered in our guides to a leather work bag for women and the work bag for men.
One more thing. A bag that is half empty stands straighter, opens quietly and does not leave you searching. In the end, that is all your bag needs to do in a job interview: not stand out at the moment you want them to look at you.
