"Bag for wedding guest." That is roughly what you type in when the invitation has been on the fridge for weeks and your outfit is finally sorted. The bag is often the last thing left. Understandable, because it is a day that starts with a ceremony in the afternoon and only ends after midnight on the dance floor.
The short answer: take a small bag with a fastening and a strap, so you can wear it on your shoulder or across your body. Big enough for your phone, keys, lipstick, tissues and the card or envelope. Leave the tote, backpack or work bag at home, even if that seems practical.
Bag for a wedding guest: start with the dress code
If the invitation mentions a dress code, most of the work is done. The more formal the dress code, the smaller and sleeker the bag. A chunky leather bag at a black tie evening stands out more than you would like, and a satin clutch at a wedding in an orchard quickly feels too stiff.

If the invitation says nothing, look at the venue and the time. A ceremony at the register office at two in the afternoon calls for something different from a dinner in a country house.
Which shape works best as a guest?
The clutch is the classic choice, and it looks lovely in photos. But think about the day itself for a moment. You are holding a glass, taking a plate from the buffet, throwing rice or confetti and hugging people you have not seen in years. You need both hands for all of that. So the clutch gets put down somewhere, and then it is gone.

A bag with a top handle or chain looks formal and suits cocktail and black tie well. As long as it is small.
Leather or satin?
Satin belongs to the evening. It shines under artificial light and goes with silk or chiffon dresses. The downside is that a drop of red wine or a greasy finger stays put, and cleaning it rarely works without leaving a ring.
Leather is tougher and works especially well during the day. Smooth black leather can go into the evening too, but vegetable-tanned leather has a matt, warm look that suits a garden party better than a gala. What goes inside?
Less than you think, and yet a little more than on an ordinary evening. This is what ends up in most wedding guests' bags:
- phone, keys and a card holder with your bank card
- lipstick or powder for touch-ups
- tissues, for the speeches
- a few plasters, for new shoes
- a hair tie or some hairpins
- the card or envelope for the couple
The envelope is where things most often go wrong. Many greetings cards come in an envelope around 16 centimetres wide, and a small bag is only just wider. So check at home whether it fits flat inside. If it does not, put it on the gift table as soon as you arrive, rather than holding it all afternoon.
Two small bags that work well at a wedding

For a black tie evening, to be honest, both are a little too casual. Then a satin clutch is the better choice.
What to leave at home
A backpack, a large tote and your work bag with its laptop compartment. Even if you are coming straight from the office. A big bag draws attention away from your outfit, and you put it under the table where it is in the way all evening. If you are coming from work, leave your work bag in the car or ask if there is somewhere to put it. The idea of one bag for the whole day works at the office and for after-work drinks, as in from office to drinks, but a wedding calls for something smaller.
What is smart on a long day is a second bag in the car or hotel room, with flat shoes, a cardigan and your charger. Then your small bag does not have to carry everything, and it still looks neat at eleven at night.
Pack your bag the evening before and walk around the house with it for a bit. That way you find out in time whether the strap is the right length and whether the fastening still closes with the envelope inside.
